What is bio-based polyethylene? A plain-English guide for print and packaging buyers

If you buy print or packaging for a living, you've probably had the email. A brand owner, a customer or your own board wants to know what you're doing about plastic. And somewhere in the reply chain, the terminology starts to slip. Bio-based gets read as biodegradable. Recyclable gets muddled with compostable. Before long, someone has put a claim in writing that the material can't back up.


To bring clarity to complexity, here's the plain-English version of what bio-based PE actually is, where its carbon benefit really comes from, and why this approach matters.


Start with the feedstock


Conventional polyethylene (PE) is made from fossil fuel-based sources, mainly crude oil and natural gas. It's one of the most widely used plastics in the world, and it’s peppered throughout flexo and packaging production, including the materials used in plate mounting.


Bio-based polyethylene is the same polymer, but made a different way. Instead of cracking fossil hydrocarbons, producers ferment sugarcane into ethanol, dehydrate that ethanol into ethylene, then polymerise it into PE. The finished material is chemically identical to fossil fuel based PE.


It’s the same molecule, mechanical properties and processing, and is fully recyclable in existing PE recycling infrastructure. Bio-based PE is considered a drop-in. It replaces the conventional material without asking anything of the converter or printer: no new equipment, no process change, no performance trade-off. In an industry where every variable on press has a cost, that is particularly important.


Where the carbon saving actually happens


A distinction that can easily trip people up is that bio-based PE is not biodegradable. At the end-of-life it behaves exactly like conventional PE, which is the very reason it recycles happily in the normal stream.


The environmental benefit sits at the other end of the life cycle, in the feedstock. Like most plants, sugarcane absorbs CO2 as it grows. That carbon is locked into the polymer and stays there through the product's working life and its recycling loops. The footprint reduction is measurable, but it happens at the start of the material's life, not at the end. Get that wrong in a customer conversation, in print, and you've made a greenwashing claim without meaning to.


The name 'green PE'


You'll see bio-based PE called 'green PE' across the industry, and it's the phrase many people search for, but we use it sparingly. The reason people reach for 'green PE', despite tightening restrictions on sustainability language, is that it's easy shorthand for 'lower-carbon feedstock'. But shorthand is where environmental claims become complex.


Under the UK's Green Claims Code, and with similar rules advancing in the EU under the Green Claims Directive, vague sustainability language is exactly what regulators are challenging. We'd rather say what the material is: polyethylene made from sugarcane instead of crude oil, with the carbon benefit at the feedstock stage.
